Sunday 19 May 2013 Orientalists, Estate Agents and the Beatles - the Development of Contemporary Yoga at Upstairs at Little Dippers, 40-42 Upper Gardner Street, North Laines, Brighton www.yogamamas.co.uk 7.00 to 9.00pm (Kirtan and Meditation from 7.00, talk at 8.00) By donation Join me in Brighton to explore how yoga come to the west, and how the ideas and practices of the ancient yoga texts got transformed into today’s plethora of asana dominated yoga styles.
Many of us know a little about the origins of yoga styles such as Iyengar, Sivananda, Astanga Vinyasa (and even Bikram), but the wider story of yoga’s interaction with the west and the rise of our contemporary approach to yoga is a fascinating one. Discover how Alexander the Great, 18th century British colonial administrators, Indian yogi warriors and magicians, American transcendentalists, the YMCA, and George Harrison all have a part to play in the story of yoga’s journey to the west… and find out what an estate agent in Camden Town has to do with it!
